The Middle East and North Africa has long been characterized by a lack of safe, suitable infrastructure for pedestrians, bikes or any other forms of soft- and micro-mobility. This status quo has been altered in recent years through a combination of pedestrian-friendly facilities, as well as the surge in online ordering and delivery services triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. These trends present road planners and traffic engineers with new challenges in their mission to offer a shared road space for all. AI algorithms will probably never replace the keen human eye in evaluating these new risks, but they can supplement human-led analysis and provide valuable support to the work of traffic engineers in the field.

This panel will explore opportunities to combine emerging AI applications that assist road agencies datamine their asset and traffic information in order to produce effective “heat maps” of road risk for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
