Tom Antonissen assumed his present role in November 2014, although he has over a decade experience with the IRF and road transport policy, with a particular focus on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), Road Safety and Road User Charging (RUC). He served for several years as a Road Safety Legal Expert for the European Commission, under its Technical Assistance and Information Exchange (TAIEX) facility.
His current responsibilities include supporting IRF’s program of regional congresses and training workshops in Europe & Central Asia as well as facilitating the activities of the IRF ITS Committee, including its Task Forces on ‘Road Adaptation for Autonomous Vehicles’ (RAAV) and ITS for Climate Impact Mitigation (ICIM), as well as the IRF RUC Committee. Congruent to his work with IRF, he currently serves as EU Affairs Director of the Brussels-based global engineering consultancy AKKA Technologies. Previously he represented several multimodal transport and logistics associations towards the EU institutions, media and stakeholders.
A Belgian national, born and raised in Brussels, following his university degree in EU and International Law he also acted for several years as Secretary General of three Belgian and two European trade federations in the construction and civil engineering machinery sector.
