Visiting Professor
Dirk Lauwers is a civil engineer and MSc in spatial planning and urban design with a working experience of more than 35 years. He is visiting professor at Ghent University and University of Antwerp, where he teaches and acts as research promoter in the fields of Mobility Planning and Traffic Engineering Design. Apart from his academic activities he has been a consultant in traffic planning and engineering and regional and urban planning.
He recently finished a study on a new road categorisation system in Belgium. He was project manager of one of the first strategic environmental assessments (for the European HST network, DG Transport, 1993). He has been responsible for several regional and transport planning processes in Central and Eastern Europe (the Baltics, Bulgaria, Romania, the Ukraine and Kosovo). He has a specific track record in road safety, e.g. coordinator of a certified RSA course.
He was a lead consultant for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (for Urban Sustainable Mobility Indicators).
He is expert for citizens' movements in Antwerp e.g. on the 'steering' design of the completion and capping of the Antwerp ring road.
He is expert in the ReVeAl Horizon2020 EU_Civitas project on Urban Vehicles Access Regulation.
