Mbakisya Onyango is a professor of civil engineering at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow. She received her PhD from Kansas State University (USA) in Transportation area, Masters from the University of Birmingham (in the United Kingdom) in transportation area, and her bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. At UTC she teaches transportation, construction materials and mechanics of materials classes. She is involved in transportation and engineering education related research. Her research interest areas are: analytical and mechanistic pavement design and analysis; civil engineering materials testing and evaluation; pavement preservation; pavement markings; transportation planning; and pavement management and evaluation. Her research funding as PI or Co-PI to date is over $2.6 million from TDOT and NSF among other funding agencies, and over 40 peer reviewed journal publications and conference proceedings. One of her research projects resulted on a concrete mix design patent.
